Michael Lewan serves as Senior Advisor of HillStaffer. With four decades of Capitol Hill experience as a Senior Staff member and government affairs advocate, Mr. Lewan has substantial expertise in legislative affairs and close relationships in both the House and Senate.
Mr. Lewan has assisted numerous Senate and House members in their reelection efforts and has played an important role in the work of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Leadership Council. He was a founder of the New Democratic Coalition, the Senate Mod Squad and the Third Way. Mr. Lewan is an acknowledged leader in the moderate Democratic movement. In 1994 President Bill Clinton named Mr. Lewan Chairman of the United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, which oversees cultural, religious and historic monuments and memorials of significance to Americans who trace their roots to Central and Eastern Europe.
Prior to HillStaffer Mr. Lewan served as president of The Michael Lewan Company, and represented a wide cross section of Fortune 500 companies and trade associations including Travelers Insurance, Guardian Insurance, The Phoenix Companies, Oracle Corporation, Idaho Power, Mutual of Omaha, Medtronic, The National Association of Dental Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and United Concordia (Highmark). Prior to The Lewan Company, Mr. Lewan served as Founding Principal in the Washington, DC office of international law firm Brown Rudnick.
While on Capitol Hill, Mr. Lewan served as Chief of Staff to Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. He also was a Senior Advisor to Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Senator Joseph Lieberman, and as an Advisor to Senator Lieberman in the 2004 Presidential Primary campaign. Prior to that, Mr. Lewan served as Chief of Staff to Representative Stephen Solarz of New York for 13 years.
Mr. Lewan has extensive public speaking, television, and radio experience including serving as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, and Radio America; lecturer in political science and public policy at the Maxwell School of Public Policy, Syracuse University; co-host of the weekly radio program “Talking Politics” on the Radio America Network; and lecturer at the Library of Congress, the Brookings Institute, and numerous other university forums, corporate boards and trade associations.
In addition to his accomplishments in the private and public sectors, Mr. Lewan was awarded the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Merit, by President Aleksander Kwasnievski of Poland (the highest honor Poland confers to a foreign citizen), in recognition of his successful work to improve Polish-American and Jewish-Christian relations. He was named “Man of the Year” by the Emanuel Foundation for Hungarian Culture in 1999.
Mr. Lewan’s past and present professional affiliations include Member, Board of Trustees, Freedom House; Chair, Board of Advisors Bernard Baruch School of Public Affairs (CUNY); Chair, Board of Advisors, Maxwell School of Public Policy at Syracuse University; Member, Board of Trustees, Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation; and Clinical Professor of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.
